With Rage and Compassion he writes his poems. He writes as he hides in the trenches. Many of the war poems I've read is not about killing the enemy but about what is going on and confusion. As time goes by, these poetry never fails to keep its meaning within showing the power of these poets. These poets are just soldiers fighting for freedom but what pushes them to write is fear and anxiousness which is what we don’t have, in order to write these poems.
I have chose to analyse the poem “Absolution” by Siegfried Sassoon and from my understanding, I have spotted two themes. Achievements and relations were the two themes that I have spotted. In this poem, Siegfried Sassoon mentions “us” and “we” throughout the poem and at the end he mentions “What need we more, my comrades and my brothers?”. The theme achievement is more of what he will achieve and achieve during and after the war and an example is “And, fighting for our freedom, we are free.” The structure of this poem follows 1212 , 3434 , 5656 which is also the same format at the roses are red, violets are blue poem, but repeated 3 times. The literary devices that could be spotted was mood and personification. Mood could be spotted in like 5 “Horror of wounds and anger at the foe,” and line 7 “We are the happy legion, for we know”. Personification could be spotted on the part where he said “Golden Wind” and “beauty shines”. The mood and personification really adds a better taste to the poem making it a lot more savouring.
In the poem I have created, I have followed the theme of achievements and relations but with a twist. Instead, the poem doesn’t follow the theme of war but school. I have followed the same structure patterns with the exact same theme with literary devices such as personification and metaphor like in line 5 where I said “In one year, our eyes will shine as bright as the sky”. The only thing I found hard mimicking the poem was the theme. Unlike Siegfried Sassoon, I’ve never experienced war before therefore I would not be able to write a poem about the theme or get close to the literary devices he had used since he had seen it before.
Absolution
The anguish of the earth absolves our eyes
Till beauty shines in all that we can see.
War is our scourge; yet war has made us wise,
And, fighting for our freedom, we are free.
Horror of wounds and anger at the foe,
And loss of things desired; all these must pass.
We are the happy legion, for we know
Time's but a golden wind that shakes the grass.
There was an hour when we were loth to part
From life we longed to share no less than others.
Now, having claimed this heritage of heart,
What need we more, my comrades and my brothers?
Highschool
It has been eleven good years
It has been our teacher and our friend
In one year, we will say cheers
And we won’t go to a dead end
In one year, our eyes will shine as bright as the sky
It has done us good and it has done us bad
As horrible as it sounds, we’ll have to say bye
Reminding of the old times, would be very sad
Some will walk on same old paths and some will walk on new
Soon we will be picking other tools
We were together as if we were stuck together with a wood glue
For sure we know we will miss this school
